Construction of the 15.9-km Abastumani Bypass is ongoing. The primary objective of the new road is to divert transit traffic away from the town of Abastumani, thereby reducing traffic congestion in the resort, improving environmental conditions, and helping preserve its unique natural environment.
Construction of the bypass is being carried out under complex geological and terrain conditions. The works include rock excavation, drilling, slope stabilization, and widening of the carriageway. Retaining walls, culverts, and drainage channels are being constructed to ensure the stability and safety of the road.
As part of the project, a 368-metre road tunnel has already been constructed. A total of six new bridges are planned. The main construction works on three bridges over the Abastumani River have been completed, with only the asphalt-concrete pavement remaining to be laid, while construction of the remaining three bridges is expected to begin in the near future.
Particular attention is being paid to minimizing the environmental impact of the bypass construction and restoring affected natural areas. In parallel with the construction works, reforestation and restoration of vegetation will begin in areas affected by the road construction.
The Roads Department has already paid the compensation required under applicable legislation to the Agency of Protected Areas. In addition, further compensatory planting has been planned in coordination with the Agency. Experts are already working on a corresponding plan that will determine the species and quantities of plants to be planted within the Abastumani Bypass area.
To protect local biodiversity, the project also provides for appropriate measures, including the construction of dedicated wildlife crossings to facilitate the migration of animal species.
The Roads Department will continue environmental restoration and landscaping measures even after the road becomes operational, with the aim of preserving and restoring the natural environment along the road to the greatest extent possible.
Alongside the construction of the Abastumani Bypass, other road projects in the direction of the resort are also ongoing, including the rehabilitation of sections of the Kutaisi–Baghdati–Abastumani–Benara road and the upgrading of road infrastructure on Asatiani Street in the town of Abastumani.
The projects are financed from the state budget.
