The Roads Department of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Georgia responds to information recently circulated regarding the possible introduction of tolls on the East–West Highway.
We would like to clarify that, neither the introduction of tolls on the Rikoti Highway nor on any other road in the country is being considered, and no decision has been made in this regard.
The acceleration of rehabilitation works on the Gomi–Sachkhere–Chiatura–Zestafoni road is solely related to the need to complete the project in a timely and high-quality manner. The importance of this road is determined both by the needs of the local population and by the sustainability and safety of the country’s road network. Therefore, references to its alternative function should not be interpreted as a prerequisite for the introduction of toll roads.
At the same time, we recognize that the opinions expressed in the media article concern an issue of public interest; however, the information presented is inaccurate. International practice includes various models for road financing and management, and such matters require comprehensive analysis, broad professional discussion, and prior public consultation.
We would like to emphasize that the use of both international and national roads in Georgia is currently free of charge for the public, and no changes in this regard are on the agenda.
The Roads Department will continue to develop road infrastructure and improve the existing network without creating additional financial burdens for citizens.
We also call on media organizations to verify the official position of the relevant authorities when reporting on matters of public importance, in order to ensure that society receives complete, balanced, and objective information.
